08.45 - 09.00 | Introduction

Frank van der Hoeven
Scientific co-ordinator Connected Cities

09.00 - 09.30 | Stedenbaan South Holland

Joost Molenaar
Province South Holland

Stedenbaan

The Province South Holland, as an emerging metropolitan urban area, is planning to concentrate its urban development in the stations areas of a new high quality public transport network: Stedenbaan. Joost Molenaar reports on these efforts to integrate sustainable mobility and urban development.

09.30 - 10.00 | Souterrain The Hague

Floris Alkemade
Director Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)
Professor Urban Design at U Gent

Souterrain; The Hague tram tunnel transport

Underground stations seemed often an unavoidable menace until the Office for Metropolitan Architecture designed the Souterrain, the tram tunnel serving The Hague's RandstadRail. Floris Alkemade shows us that an underground space is just a good or bad as its design.

10.00 - 10.30 | Break and video

Ferrara: mobility and la Dolce Vita

Producer: tvlink
Country of origine : Belgique
Genre : reportage
Length : 8'41''
Year : 2002
Synopsis: European towns are really suffering from the overwhelming presence of the motorcar. The European Union encourages towns to develop a mobility policy that respects both health and the environment. Ferrara, in the north of Italy, is a good example.

10.30 - 11.00 | 'Free' Public Transport

Michel van Hulten
Self employed adviser, trainer and author

Free public transport

Public transport should serve us all as horizontal elevators in the city according to Michel van Hulten. Recent examples throughout Belgium show that society as a whole can benefit from 'free public transport, transport paid by a third party.

11.00 - 11.30 | Connecting ELAT

Berry de Jong
SRE, Eindhoven Regional Government Administrative structure

Phileas versus Regiotram

Borders have still an impact on the way people live and work, even in the case of the Belgium - Dutch border. Internationalisation forces the Eindhoven to look over these relics from the past to seek new connections within the Eindhoven, Leuven and Aachen triangle (ELAT). Right in the middle of this triangle lies Hasselt. What a perfect hub to connect Eindhoven to the major cities and stations in Belgium Hasselt is! But Berry the Jong shows that the question if passengers between Eindhoven and Hasselt should be served by a Regiotram or a Phileas is still open for debate.
