The municipality of Kardjali is situated in the Southeast part of Bulgaria at the foot of the East Rodopy Mountain. The town Kardjali is crossed by the river Arda and is placed between two artificial lakes. The beautiful nature, the ancient fortresses, the Roman bridges and the archeological findings remind for a rich cultural and historical past of that area.
The municipality of Kardjali has 117 inhabited places, divided into 43 small boroughs. Town Kardjali is the natural, administrative, trade, cultural and industrial centre not only for the municipality but for the East Rodopy region. The town is 259 kilometres away from the capital Sofia and 90 kilometres away from the second largest city in Bulgaria, Plovdiv. Permanent population of the municipality is 76 509 and about 60% of it lives in the town.
The nearest customs is Kapitan Andreevo and it is 123 kilometres away from the town. It connects Bulgaria with Turkey and Greece. With the opening of transport corridor N 9 and the customs Makaza it will connect town Kardjali with Greece only for 57 kilometres.
The municipality of Kardjali is a local authority. People who work there are obliged to do their best to preserve the interests of the citizens and to help creating best living conditions.
The experience, the good practices and materials from the project could be used by the six other municipalities / Ardino, Djebel, Momchilgrad, Krumovgrad, Kirkovo, Chernoochene / in the region Kardjali. We have common problems and have to work together for their solving.
The municipality of Kardjali now is preparing Action plan for development from year 2007 to 2013. In it a priority is placed for developing the infrastructure of the region. There are two main reasons:
